Columbia is a planned community in Howard County. It is one of the principal cities of the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Creator and developer James W. Rouse created the community to benefit human values and a small town way of life. Opened in 1967, Columbia has consistently ranked in the top ten of CNN Money’s Best Places to Live in the United States. The centerpieces of Columbia include the The Mall and man-made 27 acre reservoir, Lake Kittamaqundi. The lake is a popular attraction for summer festivals and 4th of July fireworks. Villages in Columbia were made to give a small town feel to residents and many have their own high school or middle school. All villages have a shopping center, community center and more. Street names are inspired by famous works of art and literature – you will know when you hear one that the address must be in Columbia.
